Charles D. Whelly, KC, Proud Torchbearer
Charles (Chip) Whelly, QC, a partner in our Saint John office, was buoyed by an emotional charge from the cheering crowd as he proudly carried the Olympic Flame along that city’s King Street, which has been described as the shortest, steepest main street in Canada.
Chip’s run on November 25, 2009 was Day 27 of the 100-day journey of the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay presented by RBC and Coca-Cola. “I was surprised and honoured to be selected,” said Chip, “Participation in the Olympic program and the loud support of the Cox & Palmer family made this a very special event for me, one I will long-remember.”
The Olympic Flame is being carried by twelve thousand Torchbearers through more than 1000 Canadian communities and places of interest. It is the longest relay held within the borders of any Host Country in history. The Olympic Torch Relay concludes in Vancouver on February 12, as it lights the Olympic Cauldron signaling the start of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
